授業の目的 【日本語】 | | | | 授業の目的 【英語】 | | This course aims at arguing one of the most important concepts in social sciences in international development: institution. Recently institution has been widely employed by social scientists as the concept that occupies the center of analysis. In this course, we will address the puzzle of collective action and discuss how institution has become one of the fundamental perspectives to understand political processes and policy outcomes. We will also review both classical and recent works on state-building, so as to comprehend and critically discuss the most recent development of theories. This is discussion-centered course. All participants are required to read the designated course materials in advance, and actively participate in the discussion. By taking this course, students acquire: (1) theoretical framework of institutional effects, origins, and changes; and (2) how to integrate the theoretical explanation of both continuity and changes of social, economic, and political phenomena. As institutions become a key to solve societal problems, students can learn the strategies and potential pitfalls in institutional endeavors. |
