This course will cover selected topics in common law and Federal civil procedure in the United States, including: (1) subject matter jurisdiction of the Federal courts; (2) personal jurisdiction in US courts; (3) applicable law in Article III diversity actions; (4) discovery procedures and scope of discovery; (5) class actions; (6) legal framework of product liability; (7) remedies and scope of relief; (8) the impact of civil juries.

There are no academic prerequisites for this course.
成績評価の方法と基準
Appraisal will be based on participation and a final examination. Participation will count toward 40%, and the final examination 60% of the final mark.

In addition to assigned case readings, we will make reference to the U.S. Federal Rules of Civil Procedure ( https://www.cali.org/books/federal-rules-civil-procedure-2015 ).

Students will be assigned to prepare summary briefs of each case read, and an outline of rules covered in the course as a final submission.

Students must be prepared to adjust their study method and approach to unfamiliar structures, to read and analyze court decisions, to articulate their arguments in written and spoken English.
【遠隔授業の形式等】 As the course involves the reading of US court judgments, we will proceed as follows:
The first session will be a training session on Jurism (https://juris-m.github.io/downloads), the platform that we will use for sharing course material.
Each following session will consist of two elements: (1) submission of case briefs on the items to be discussed; and (2) an online Zoom discussion of the materials at the scheduled class time.
Assessment will be based on participation and submitted materials.
