Goals of the Course [JPN]
多くの複雑な問題を抱える人類社会において、科学への期待は年々高まっている。自然科学を志す者にとって、世界規模で議論されている様々な科学関連の問題に関心を持ち、考え、そして自らの考えを持つことは大切なことである。本セミナーでは、NatureやScienceなどの科学マガジンに掲載されている一般読者向けの英文記事を読み、その内容について調査・発表を行い、現在世界で話題となっている科学関連の問題について討論を行う。

Goals of the Course [ENG]
As human society faces many complex problems, people's hopes for science are increasing year by year. It is important for those who aspire to natural science to be interested in, think about, and have their own opinions on various science-related issues that are being discussed on a global scale. In this seminar, we will read English articles for general readers that are published in science magazines such as Nature and Science, search and present the contents, and discuss science-related issues that are currently hot topics in the world.

科学記事の英語を読解することができる。自然科学分野の幅広い話題に対して関心を持つことができる。特定の問題に対して自分の意見を持ち、それを論理的に表現することができる。

Be able to read and understand scientific articles in English. Have an interest in a wide range of topics in natural science. Have an opinion on a particular issue and be able to express it logically.

Message from the Instructor
This course is designed to introduce first-year students to university education, to acquire autonomous learning ability, and to develop basic academic abilities and skills common to broad academic fields. Opportunities of multifaceted intellectual training are provided to develop the basic abilities of reading, writing, and speaking, as well as to learn how to quest for the truth with great interest.

本セミナーの「世界の科学の話題」という題材を通じて、目の前にある問題の本質を見抜き、それに対してどのようなアプローチを行えばよいのかを論理的に考え、筋道立てて他の参加者にわかるように伝える力を養って下さい。これは、社会でどのような分野に進んでも、指導的立場に立つ人材に必ず求められる能力です。
そのためには、積極的に自分の考えを伝える積極性と度胸を養う必要があります。さらに、他人の考え方に耳を傾け、必要であれば取り入れる柔軟性と、正しいと信じることは最後の一人になっても主張し続ける勇気も大切です。
