授業の目的　【日本語】
Goals of the Course [JPN]
本授業科目は、専門的学習のツールとして外国語の能力を高め、異文化理解を深めて、国際社会に相応しい教養を育むことが目的である。そのねらいは、研究拠点大学である名古屋大学の学生にふさわしい学術英語を使いこなす能力を身につけるところにある。本授業では、学術的な英文に関するエッセイレベルのリーディング能力とライティング能力を養成する。

This course is intended to improve students' skills in academic English necessary to study at a research-oriented university like Nagoya University. The course aims to develop students’ abilities in reading and writing at an intermediate level.

論理的な英文のカギとなるエッセイの構造に着目し、目的に応じて必要な情報をいかに読みとるか、また逆に、自分の考えをその根拠とともにいかに説得力ある論理的な英文に組み立てるかを学ぶ。将来、専門の論文を英語で読んだり書いたりする時に、指針となる英文構成法の基礎、および実際に役立つ英語表現を多く習得する。

注意事項
Notice for Students
TOEFL-ITP (Reading) およびCriteorionの評価を30%とする。なお、５回以上欠席をした場合、「欠席」の評価がつく。英語検定試験による単位認定を申請する学生以外は、履修取り下げを認めない。

Message from the Instructor
The purpose of this course is to help students improve their foreign language proficiency, understand foreign cultures, and acquire the knowledge required in a globalized society. Students are expected to master professional academic English. With a special focus on essay structures, students will learn how to extract necessary information effectively and write in a logical and persuasive manner. Students will also study sentence composition methods and useful expressions.
課外学習の説明資料は、アカデミック・イングリッシュ支援室のサイト ( http://elearn.ilas.nagoya-u.ac.jp/access/ ) からダウンロードすること。
CLASSROOM RULES
RULE 1. You must bring your own dictionary to class.
RULE 2. Please use each other's first names or nicknames even if you feel uncomfortable at first. If you want to show respect to your teachers, you should address them with a title (Mr.or Ms.). However, I don't mind your calling me Miki.
RULE 3. Create a folder or portfolio in which you can keep all of your tests, quizzes, homework assignments, articles and/or today's menus. You must also bring your portfolio to class. At the end of the term you will be expected to show your portfolios and discuss what you learned from your activities.
RULE 4. Make sure to discuss all questions as a group/pair, and please answer all questions with full sentences. Don't worry about mistakes.
RULE 5. Please stay focused and do not get sidetracked by unrelated personal conversations.
RULE 6. You can skip two short tests but if you skip three short tests your grades will be lowered one level.
Rule 7. If you don't submit your homework by the deadline, I will take off one point per day.
Rule 8. Come to class on time. Three unexcused tardies count as one absent. If you come to class more than 20 minutes late, you will be counted as absent.
