The aim of this course is reading materials related to social science critically and acquire the ability to see and think from different perspectives, through discussions in Japanese.

Objectives of the Course
At the end of this course, participants are expected to:
- be able to read and understand columns and essays in newspaper articles on social science.
- be able to read and understand reading material about social thought.
- be able to articulate his/her own point of view about social issue while making connections to related matters.
授業の内容や構成
Course Content / Plan
1. Critical reading using columns/essays from newspaper articles, etc.
Understanding, critical reading, and discussion of columns and essays of social issues.
2. Critical reading of materials about problems related to research misconduct.
Understanding, critical reading and discussion of reading materials on research misconduct issues.
3. Critical reading of texts related to social thought.
Understanding, critical reading, and discussion of texts that introduce the thinkers who formed social thought.

- Before the class, students will be required to submit questions about reading materials.
- After the class, students will be required to submit the assignments to describe their understanding.

Students who received an Exemption of Japanese language course in International and exchange center are under-qualified to sign up with this course.
成績評価の方法と基準
Course Evaluation Method and Criteria
Your final grade will be calculated according to the following process:
- attendance and contribution to class discussions ・・・20%
- assignment ・・・60%
- final examination (oral examination) ・・・20%
To pass,
- students must participate and actively express what they have understanded in the class and their thoughts on the topics.
- students must show their understanding and critical opinions on the oral examinations and the assignments.

*Approximately one-two hours of learning are required.

Notice for Students
This course will be taught in Japanese. This syllabus is temporary. It may be altered due to the students’ Japanese proficiency level. They are required to prepare and review each lesson. In addition to the assignments the lecturer gives, they are expected to carry out work on their own.
※Students are expected to attend every class. If the student was absent for more than 5 lectures, he/she will be considered as “absent”.
※Being late three times is counted as one absence.
