Goals of the Course
  This course examines theories and approaches in political studies. Theories and approaches are important because our understanding of 'reality' always depends on our theoretical and/or conceptual framework. 
    While cases referred to in this course will be ones of advanced democracies including Japan, it is also possible to apply theories examined in this course to developing countries.

- Students will be able to develop ability to apply theories both for examining and for explaining political events.

4. Critiques of Pluralism
5. Neo-Corporatism
6. Neo-Marxist Theories of the State
7. Power Resource Theory and Comparative Welfare States
8. Critiques of the Power Resource Theory
9. New Institutionalisms
10. Ideas and Discourse in Political Analysis
11. Normative Democratic Theory

Course Evaluation Method and Criteria
Grading between A+ to F (for 2nd year students) or between S to F (for Students in 3rd year and above) is based on the sum of 1) several 'response comments' during the term (20%) and 2) final essay (80%). Please refer to the Student Handbook for details of the grading standard and a pass mark.
