This course is intended to provide students with an introduction to political science, looking at major branches of the discipline, reading political science scholarship, conducting research, and ultimately analyzing and writing political science papers.

Objectives of the Course
We will start with the assumption that students have no prior background in political science or in academic research, and will work to provide students with some of the basic tools of social science research and analysis. By the end of the course, students should have an introductory understanding of political science and the major branches of the discipline, as well as a working knowledge of academic research methodologies and paper writing.

Class 3 - Major branches: comparative politics
Class 4 - Major branches: political economy
Class 5 - Major branches: political philosophy
Class 6 - Methodology: basic research, where to find things
Class 7 - Methodology: research exercises
Class 8 - Methodology: reading academic papers
Class 9 - Methodology: citations and plagiarism
Class 10 - Paper writing: research question, hypothesis and data collection
Class 11 - Paper writing: analysis and conclusion
Class 12 - Paper writing: writing a research paper
Class 13 - Paper writing: presentations, powerpoint and handouts
Class 14 - Presentations: student presentations
Class 15 - Presentations: student presentations

A good command of the English language (reading, speaking, and writing) is required.
