授業の目的 【英語】 Goals of the Course | | This is an advanced Political Science course. It introduces the subfield of International Relations (IR) known as Security Studies. Through a series of readings, discussions and in-class activities, we are going to cover the most important concepts and real-world issues in International Security. It is divided into four main parts.
In Part 1, we consider the various theoretical approaches to understanding international security.
In Part 2, we review key concepts that will be necessary to understand security issues.
In Part 3, we consider the institutions that states use to manage security problems.
In Part 4, we analyze the contemporary challenges states face in maintaining international security. |

履修条件・関連する科目 Course Prerequisites and Related Courses | | This is an advanced course. Students should have taken an introductory course in Political Science and a course in International Relations. It is strongly recommended that you have already taken the courses Introduction to International Relations (E) and Contemporary Japanese Diplomacy (E). We will be building on this previously learned material. |

成績評価の方法と基準 Course Evaluation Method and Criteria | | Students are expected to attend all classes and complete all assigned readings. Students will be graded as follows.
1. Attendance (10%)
2. Oral Exam 1 (15%)
3. Take-home Mid-term Exam (30%)
4. Oral Exam 2 (15%)
5. Take-home Final Exam (30%)
The minimum grade required to pass this course is C- (60% or above).
Letter grades are as follows:
A+ 95% or above
A 80% or above, but below 95%
B 70% or above, but below 80%
C 65% or above, but below 70%
C- 60% or above, but below 65%
F Below 60 |

教科書・参考書 Textbook/Reference Book | | There is no textbook. Course materials and supplementary readings will be provided throughout the course. |

課外学習等(授業時間外学習の指示) Study Load(Self-directed Learning Outside Course Hours) | | Students should expect 2 to 5 hours per week of preparation, including reading, reflecting, preparing written assignments, and reviewing notes. The number of hours of preparation will increase during the weeks before and during the oral examination periods and take-home examination periods.
Oral exams will be scheduled over the span of one week. During that time, students must schedule a 15 minute meeting with the instructor in his office or on ZOOM. Two weeks before, the instructor will provide a list of possible topics/questions that students will have to explain/answer during the exam. Failure to appear at the scheduled oral exam will result in a grade of zero. Students will be evaluated on their ability to orally answer the questions and knowledgeably discuss the topics.
The take-home exam will be provided one week before its due date. It will be a series of written short answer and essay questions. Students should complete the exam alone and submit to the instructor on NUCT before the deadline. |

注意事項 Notice for Students | | This course includes two oral examinations. The purpose is to evaluate student's ability to verbally explain the concepts and ideas learned in this course. It is also practice for explaining difficult concepts in an interview-like atmosphere. |

遠隔授業(オンデマンド型)で行う場合の追加措置 Additional measures for remote class (on-demand class) | | Should any student not be able to attend an in-person class, the lecture will be recorded and distributed to all students. The instructor will be available for answering student questions immediately after each class. Students can also make an appointment to talk to the instructor after class. |
