授業の目的 【英語】 Goals of the Course | | This course aims to provide a basic framework to understand "international environmental rules" between states that apply to global environmental problems. But beyond international law, the course is designed to understand various "global environmental governance mechanisms" that address environmental problems. |

授業の内容や構成 Course Content / Plan | | The course will be organized as follows: (1).for the first few weeks, we consider the fundamental institutional design (actors, regulatory tools, implementation methods) to tackle global environmental problems;
(2)then, discuss a few examples of global environmental problems; and
(3) lastly, get to know fieldwork skills and methods that can be used when interviewing various actors regarding global environmental issues.
(1) Understand international order and global governance concerning global environmental problems:
-Who are important actors in global environmental governance?
-What kinds of regulatory tools do we have to solve environmental problems?:
Treaties, soft law, and private regulation
-What are the relationships between environmental regimes and other regimes?
-What kinds of methods are available to implement commitments?:
Courts, other soft tools, and unilateral measures
(2) Case Studies:
- Climate Change
- EU's Unilateral Measures for protecting environment
(3) Guide to fieldwork interviewing skills:
-How do you approach interviews with actors in your own research topic? |

成績評価の方法と基準 Course Evaluation Method and Criteria | | ・This course is assessed by two components: (1) class attendance and class discussion participation: 40 % and
(2) final exam: 60%. The score above or equal to 60 is a passing grade.
・Participation in class discussions is expected of all students. To receive a passing grade, students must understand the feature of international environmental law and global environmental governance and be able to critically evaluate the ways in which these instruments are operating. |

教科書・参考書 Textbook/Reference Book | | There is no principal textbook that is required to purchase for this class, however, useful readings will be instructed during class. |

課外学習等(授業時間外学習の指示) Study Load(Self-directed Learning Outside Course Hours) | | At each class, readings and discussion questions to prepare for the next class are set out for assignment. Participants will need to spend at least one hour for the assignment. |
