Goals of the Course
With the rise of radical right political forces as well as counter-movements exemplified, for instance, by the #MeToo movement, ‘gender’ has been a focal point of recent political developments across different countries. Japan as a country is now facing particularly grave political challenges with regards to gender issues because of an internationally high degree of gender inequality, demonstrated by a series of international rankings. This lecture course aims to provide students with a wider and in-depth understanding of both theoretical discussions on gender and politics and recent developments in Japan.

In order to do so, the lecture course focuses on four different topics that have been highlighted in recent studies on gender and politics, i.e., ‘gender as an analytical lens’,
‘political representation’, ‘the political economy of work’ and ‘the politics of the family’. For each topic, the first lecture examines general theoretical discussions. On that basis, the second lecture explores the Japanese situation. These lectures are supplemented by the discussion sessions through which students will have opportunities to engage in diagnostic analyses of gender politics by making presentations.
