Objectives of the Course
This course will complete a series of 3 courses (Genetics I,II,III) which in combination will provide a basic understanding of molecular genetics, and will equip the student with a background in knowledge and thinking skills for undertaking research in life sciences and for continuing studies by participating in seminars as a lab member.
授業の内容や構成
Course Content / Plan
Topics covered: Regulation of gene expression, genomics, systems biology, and methodology.
Lectures based on "Molecular Biology of the Gene", by James D. Watson et al. will be given by 3 faculty members of the Division of Biological Science (Chapter numbers are according to the 7th edition).
Chapter 18 "Transcriptional Regulation in Prokaryotes" by Akira Kanamori

成績評価の方法と基準
Course Evaluation Method and Criteria
Each instructor will be responsible for 100 points for a course-total of 300 points.
Evaluation will be based on in-class participation (0-30%) and assignments or examinations (70-100%), with percentage depending on the individual instructor.
Grading scale: A+=95-100%; A=80-84%; B=70-79%; C=65-69%; C-=60-64%, F=below 59%, of 300 point total.
Formal requests for special considerations concerning health problems etc. should be submitted with documentation through the student's Student Advisor as early as possible.
不可(F)と欠席(W)の基準
Criteria for "Fail (F)" & "Absent (W)" grades
An "F" grade will be given for insufficient points and a "W" for withdraws.
参考書
Reference Book
None required, but "Molecular Biology of the Cell" by Alberts et al. provides excellent complementary reading material.
教科書・テキスト
Textbook
Molecular Biology of the Gene, James D. Watson et al. CSH Press/Pearson (6th edition or newer)

課外学習等(授業時間外学習の指示)
Study Load(Self-directed Learning Outside Course Hours)
Study the corresponding section in "Molecular Biology of the Gene" in preparation for each lecture, as the instructors will sometimes introduce new findings going beyond what is covered in the text book. Handouts will be distributed to facilitate review of the lectures afterwards.
