Goals of the Course(JPN)
This course aims to develop students ability to understand and handle basic plant biology concepts in English.
Students will familiarize themselves with plant biology-related terminology in English and will discuss plant biology concepts in English.
Students will also be given opportunity to read a biological scientific paper and summarize it in an oral presentation in English.

授業の内容や構成
Course Content / Plan
The course will cover the following modules:
1. Plant morphology
Students will learn about basic overview of plant morphology and related terminology
2. Plant nutrition and transport
Students will learn basic concepts of mechanism of water and nutrients transport in plants, and related terminology
3. Control systems in plants - plant hormones and other regulatory mechanisms
Students will learn about the main groups of plant hormones and related terminology
4. Reading and understanding scientific papers
Students will learn how to approach reading a scientific paper, what are its main parts and what information they can find in each part, as well as strategies for effective reading of scientific papers based on their purpose.
5. Preparing scientific oral presentation
Students will learn how to prepare an oral presentation for scientific purposes, including research presentation and paper summary presentation.
6. Student presentations
Students will make an oral presentation of a team project summarizing a scientific paper on a biology-related topic of their choice.
履修条件
Course Prerequisites
There are no formal prerequisites for this course.
Interest in Biology is the only prerequisite.
The course provides an introductory level overview of the content, so even students who are not Biology majors are encouraged to join. Students who are not confident in their English skills, but have a desire to improve them, are also very much welcome.

成績評価の方法と基準
Course Evaluation Method and Criteria
Grading is based on class participation (10% of final grade), textbook social reading on Perusall comments (10% of final grade), weekly quizzes (50% of final grade) and one group oral presentation (30% of the final grade).
A passing grade will be given based on a demonstrated understanding of the basic concepts and terminology of the topics studied in the course, and participation in a group project.
不可(F)と欠席(W)の基準
Criteria for "Fail (F)" & "Absent (W)" grades
Absent: Submitted Withdrawal Request Form;
Fail: failure to accumulate 60 points or more from the evaluation criteria.

Study Load(Self-directed Learning Outside Course Hours)
Students are expected to preview the lecture slides and look up the designated terminology, as well as to read the assigned textbook content IN ADVANCE and come to class prepared to discuss it.
In addition, students are expected to work on and prepare one team project outside of class hours in order to present it in class.

This course is planned in hybrid format:
Lectures will be held as face-to-face classes with live online access via dedicated Zoom link. Students will have the freedom to choose and join the lectures online or in the classroom at their convenience.
All quizzes will be submitted on NUCT course site.
Group presentations can also be conducted live online, if necessary.
The textbook is accessible and downloadable free online. Additional online social reading space will be provided on Perusall platform.
If there is a change of format, this information will be clearly announced on the course NUCT site.
