Goals of the Course
This seminar is specifically aimed at MA and PhD students who are interested in issues of migration. It uses an ongoing research project on foreign workers in Japan to explore migration issues from the perspectives of migrants, the sending society and the receiving society. Students participating in this course will learn about migration and development through active engagement with research work.

Objectives of the Course
The objective is to explore migration as a subject of academic research from multiple perspectives, using foreign technical trainees and workers in Japan as the basis of analysis. Students participating in this seminar will gain an overall understanding of different aspects of migration theory, assess different types of migration, and discuss complex issues such as assimilation, integration, xenophobia and xenophilia.
授業の内容や構成
Course Content / Plan
The plan for each semester will be flexible based on the progress the group and individual students make in their self-selected or assigned research tasks. The weekly sessions will be designed to collate and discuss findings or explore theories and methodologies used in migration studies. Some sessions will also feature guest speakers from migration-related civil society organizations, experts in migration studies, and/or government representatives who work in fields related to migrants.

None, but seminar participants should be researching something related to migration.
成績評価の方法と基準
Course Evaluation Method and Criteria
Students are evaluated on the effort they put in to their part of the ongoing research. Credit will be given if students achieve a minimum of C- for all evaluated criteria.
