Goals of the Course | | "Good writing is not a natural gift. You have to learn to write well.” -- David Ogilvy (1982)
This course is designed to equip you with the skills to write an excellent academic paper, namely, a thesis, dissertation, or manuscript. As writing a paper such as your thesis or dissertation is likely one of the most difficult writing challenges you will face, this course aims to reduce the stress associated with this challenge. By providing you with the tools—the step-by-step recipes—for tackling each element of the writing process (e.g., structuring an Introduction, generating testable hypotheses, writing a persuasive Discussion section, etc.), you will be empowered to write in a confident and stress-free manner. |

Objectives of the Course | | | As mentioned above, you are likely currently under pressure to write an important academic paper. Therefore the schedule of the course follows the order of an academic paper and can be thought of as covering four essential topics: Introduction, Method, Results, and Discussion. Slides for each lecture will be provided to you such that in addition to learning how to write an academic paper, you will have a detailed reference guide to assist you with any issues that arise during your academic writing career. |

Although these two courses are designed to support and build upon each other, it is not necessary that you enroll in both courses.] |

成績評価の方法と基準
Course Evaluation Method and Criteria | | Your grade for this course will be based on two components:
1. Take-Home Assignments (60%). Twice throughout the semester you will be given one week to complete an academic writing related assignment. The contents of the assignments will be related to the writing skills that are taught in class. Each assignment should take no more than several hours to complete.
2. Participation (40%)
As long as you complete the two take-home assignments, attend class, study/review (for approximately 1.5 hours) between classes, and participate, you should have no problem doing well in this course. Credit is given of C- or C (where applicable) or higher for each graded criterion. |
