授業の目的 【英語】 Goals of the Course | | The course aims at understanding and examining issues associated with civil wars and peacebuilding through engaging with both theories and practices in the field. Starting with the examination of the causes, dynamics, and outcomes of civil wars, the course further analyzes rationales behind specific peacebuilding policies and their intended and unintended consequences on war-torn societies. It also aims at understanding how the context of each civil war (causes, dynamics, and outcomes) affects and constrains the utility of peacebuilding policies.
Throughout the course, students will further their understanding and critical thinking skills through large and small group discussions, role plays, and other interactive activities. Prior to each class, students will be expected to have completed the week's required readings. During the class, students will be required to participate in the class activities. By taking this course, students will be able to not only understand and critically evaluate different theoretical approaches to peacebuilding but also learn about both the benefits and pitfalls of specific peacebuilding policies in light of the situation on the ground. After completing this course, students will have the ability to critically and independently assess the impact of peacebuilding policies and to be involved in peacebuilding-related policy making. |

成績評価の方法と基準 Course Evaluation Method and Criteria | | Evaluation will be based on active class participation including presentationf in Week 2-13 (30%), active class participation including as a discussant in Week 14-15 (10%), Policy Brief including its presentation in Week 14-15 (60%). |
