Goals of the Course | | | This course is aimed at introducing (a) historical process of Latin American countries’ social, economic, and political development, and (b) theoretical understandings of core development issues. Latin American region has rich experience of both successes and failures with regard to political and economic development. In the region, not only some developmental challenges were firstly addressed but also some innovative reforms were firstly implemented. Important theories in economics and political science, which have many implications to other regions, have been constructed and tested in Latin American context. The goal, therefore, is to transmit both empirical and theoretical knowledge from Latin America. |

授業の内容や構成
Course Content / Plan | | The lecture is structured into five sections, which are interrelated each other. After an introduction of particular features in the regional social structure, brief history of economic development will be provided. Then we turn to democratization, a study field to which Latin American experience has large contribution. While these three sections are more historical, the latter half with two sections narrows down on specific themes in current policymaking and policy development. Government officials, development practitioners, and political and economic analysts as well as aspirants for those, either in Latin America or in other regions of the world, will find them useful.

Course Evaluation Method and Criteria | | Attendance and discussion: 10 x 13 = 130
Summary presentation: 40 x 2~3 = 80~120
Short answers for quizzes: 20 x 4 = 80
Weekly quizzes: 5 x 14 = 70
Term paper: 120
Minimum points required to pass: 340
*No point will be given if one arrives more than 5 minutes late to class.
*No remedy for late or no submission of assignments.
*Credit is given to C- or C (where applicable) or higher grade for each criterion. |

Study Load(Self-directed Learning Outside Course Hours) | | Students are required to complete following tasks outside of the classes.
(1) Finish reading materials before each class.
(2) Answering weekly quizzes and short quizzes.
(3) Make presentation for presentation materials in due (2-3 presentations per semester)
(4) Make and submit term paper. |
