授業の内容や構成
Course Content / Plan | | The course is an introduction to the work of Iris Murdoch, focusing on one of her novels, The Time of the Angels. Themes that we will engage with include reading Murdoch in terms of her use of symbolism and intertextual allusion, including references to William Blake. I will present some of my own research on Murdoch, shortly to be published in the chapter. “‘These fragments I have shored against my ruins’: poetry, multiplicity and Being-towards-Death in The Time of the Angels and A Word Child” in the collection Reading Love with Iris Murdoch, edited by Rossitsa Terzieva-Artemis. We will also explore the relationship between Murdoch’s novels and the socio-political context in which they were written, their relationship with psycho-analysis and with the question of Murdoch’s moral philosophy as expressed in The Sovereignty of Good and Metaphysics as a Guide to Morals.
