Goals of the Course
By the end of this course, students will:

1) Gain fundamental knowledge of key themes, individuals, events, and ideas in the history of modern Japan.
2) Conduct basic historical research including the effective use of libraries, archives, and online databases.
3) Demonstrate their mastery of historical knowledge and practice through classroom discussion and written work.

The course is recommended for all JACS students because history is useful background for thesis writing, regardless of field of study.

Course Content / Plan
This lecture course is designed as an introduction to the academic study of modern Japanese history. We will cover some of the most pressing and prevailing questions and themes in modern Japanese history, including: modernization, state/society relations, women's roles, the environment, imperialism and war, postwar pacifism, etc. Students will also practice archival research skills by accessing digital archives and library to complete archival exercides and conduct research on topics of their own choice.

Course Evaluation Method and Criteria
Pariticipation = 20 points
Archive Exercises (5x10%) = 50 points
Final Project = 30 points
*Student must surpass 60 points to pass.
