授業の目的 【英語】
Goals of the Course
Concurring to Anthony Burgess' statement according to which "translation is not a matter of words only: it is a matter of making intelligible a whole culture", this course aims to give students a broader understanding of translation that goes beyond technical and practical questions. To do so, we will approach translation from a broad interdisciplinary perspective. We will read a wide variety of theoretical texts ranging from translation studies to anthropological concepts such as cultural translation, compare a number of translations of the same text, and even analyze the role of translation in fictional texts. Particular emphasis will be put on the role translation played in the Japanese modernization process and the conception of modern Japan as a "culture of translation."

授業の内容や構成
Course Content / Plan
Note that although concerned with translation, this class is NOT designed as part of a language program meant to improve your translation skills. It is also not a lecture but a seminar the learning outcome of which depends on your preparation and active participation in class.

We will read theoretical texts that deal with different aspects of “translation” in the context of “Japan,” including the politics of translation (e.g. post-colonial translation), translation and gender, self-translation and the question of original/translation, fake translation and parody. In order to become aware of the delicacy of translation, we will also compare different translations from a same original text and discuss the translational choices made.

W1-5: Introduction to various translation theories
W6-10: Translation in Japanese (literary) history
W11-15: Analysis of concrete examples

The above schedule is tentative and subject to change.
