授業の目的 【英語】 Goals of the Course | | This course offers an introductory to research and study skills. It is broken up into two parts.
The first part is taught by Dr. Nishino. A vital part of research skills involves identifying multiple biases each one of us has. Many of us would like to think that we are rational, sensitive and sensible, and that we do not need further reminders. Yet so many of us fall into implicit biases and make decisions based on unexamined assumptions. How can this phenomenon happen? What can we do about it? In the first part of the course, Dr Nishino will facilitate workshops around Hans Rosling’s best-selling book, Factfulness (2018). Rosling argues that we must cultivate sound habits of analysing and using facts to see the world. We will learn what Rosling names ten instincts and how we can put these instincts into practice. The skills we build now will lay the foundation for your daily lives and research skills.
In the second part of the course, Professor McGinty will introduce students to specific skills that are necessary for doing undergraduate research in the legal field. Specifically we’ll look at how to use legal databases, how to set relevant research questions for use in research essays, and how to develop methods of answering those questions. |
