授業の目的 【英語】 Goals of the Course | | The Aim of this course is to understand the logic how the pre-modern society has turned to the free society oriented by market economy spread in major industrialized countries in the 19th century. Students will further learn what kind of problems such liberal market economy brought about, how the market society of the 20th century responded (made adjustment) to these problems, and what kind of problems today's economic society has which stands on those bases. With this process students will gain basic analytical skills. |

授業の内容や構成 Course Content / Plan | | 1 Introduction --- Basic framework of Japanese discipline of economic history 2 Basic understanding of pre-modern and modern times in economic history 3 Significance of Industrial Revolution and economic liberalism in Britain 4 Industrialization of other European countries and US --- The growth of the world economy 5 World economic system and its resonance to the "peripheral" countries and areas 6 International economic disintegration after World War I 7 The Great Depression and its repercussions 8 Formation of the international economic order of the western world after World War II 9 Significant economic growth in industrialized countries after World War II and slowing growth since the 1970s 10 Socialist planned economic system of the eastern block during the Cold War 11 European integration 12 North-South issue 13 Changes in the world economy after the end of the Cold War 14 Problems of the world economy since the beginning of the 21st century 15 Concluding discussion |

成績評価の方法と基準 Course Evaluation Method and Criteria | | Criterion for evaluation is students' capability to develop the arguments in the class and to apply them to their own thinking. It will be determined from: Final Examination: 50% Active Participation to the discussion: 20% Essay: 30%. The course withdrawal system does not apply. If the student does not take the final exam or submit the essay, his / her grade will be "absent". |
