Goals of the Course
This course covers selected aspects of comparative law dedicated to Continental Law as opposed to Common Law among the major legal systems. It will comprise a general introduction to theory and method of comparative law and a detailed description of the outstanding features of the major systems in the Civil (Continental) Law tradition, among which: France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the legal systems of South America, Russia, Japan. It will also offer some taxonomical remarks about the current debate about the theory of legal families. The course intends to give a better understanding of the structure and the differences between various legal systems around the world. It should also enhance the students’ comprehension of their own legal systems.

Mid term (40%) and final assessment (40%). Contribution to the debate (20%)
Pass: Credit is given for C
To receive a passing grade, students must demonstrate the knowledge of the basic features of the Civil law system, based on knowledge learned through the class

Textbook/Reference Book
Due to the peculiar nature of the seminar, there is no need of a general textbook for students. Lessons will be based on specifically created PowerPoint presentations. Also, copies of some relevant readings will be distributed to students on a regular basis, via the online syllabus system.
