英語の感覚表現に関する最新の書籍であるWinter (2019)を読み、感覚表現の記号論的・意味論的特徴とその研究方法について考える。

Goals of the Course
The purpose of this course is to read Winter’s (2019) Sensory Linguistics and discuss the semiotic and semantic properties of English sensory expressions and the methods for studying them.

英語で書かれた専門書を正確に理解し、それを批判的に考察する能力を養う。また、その内容を各自の研究に応用する可能性を探る。
授業の内容や構成
Course Content / Plan
春学期に続き、毎回、受講生ないし教員が10ページ弱の内容をまとめ、全員で類例および疑問点・問題点を検討する。

章構成は以下の通り：

3. Sensory semiotics
4. Ineffability
5. The embodied Lexicon Hypothesis
6. Synesthesia and metaphor
7. Synesthetic metaphors are not metaphorical
8. The hierarchy of the senses
9. Explaining the hierarchy of the senses
10. Methodological foundations
11. Norming the senses
12. Dominance relations and specialization of sensory words
13. Correlations and clusters
14. Semantic preferences of sensory words
15. Frequency, semantic complexity, and iconicity
16. The evaluative dimension
17. Re-evaluating the hierarchy of the senses
18. Conclusion

進度や受講生の興味に応じて、学会応募要旨の書き方や各自の論文研究についても話題にする。
履修条件・関連する科目
Course Prerequisites and Related Courses
言語学（特に認知意味論）入門的知識および英語読解能力を前提とする。また、春学期の「共時英語学演習IIb」の内容を理解していることが必要となる。
成績評価の方法と基準
Course Evaluation Method and Criteria
授業への貢献および教科書のレビュー（50%）、期末試験ないしレポート試験（50%）；
60点以上を合格とする。
