Goals of the Course | | In this course, students will aim for the acquisition of English-to-Japanese translation skills required for qualified interpreters/translators who will join the global professional community. The students will be encouraged to enhance their knowledge of interpretation and translation techniques to overcome simple literal translation, and to develop skills and abilities required for bilingual professionals.
Course goals include:
1. Translating English texts into Japanese with accuracy and speed.
2. Presenting your translation with efficiency.
3. Reviewing the texts translated by your classmates and giving feedback effectively. |

授業の内容や構成
Course Content / Plan | | この授業では、主に英語から日本語への通訳・翻訳演習を行います。使用する課題は、フィクション、ノンフィクション、映画のスクリプト、歌詞、広告コピー、商品解説、マニュアル、技術資料など、おもにウェブから選定します。オリンピック・パラリンピック等イベントのボランティア通訳者に必要な通訳技能および日本語／日本文化の基礎知識を含む実務通訳・実務翻訳を視野に入れ、さまざまなマテリアルに挑戦します。授業は以下のように進めます。
1. 演習形式であるため、各自が仕上げた課題を発表し、全員で意見を述べ合うことを重視します。授業中に発言が少ない場合は、減点対象になります。
2. 初回の授業では、短い英語原文を一定時間内に英訳します。必ず辞書アプリの入った電子機器を持参してください。仕上げた翻訳を比較検討しながら全員でディスカッションをおこないます。
3. 第２回以降の課題と授業計画の詳細については、初回の授業で説明します。
Course Content
Spring semester (1a) offers English to Japanese translation activity, while fall semester (1b) offers Japanese to English translation. During spring semester, students will translate texts from novels, literature, non-fiction, movie scripts, lyrics from songs, advertisements, product descriptions, manuals, technical documents and other material from the internet. The course will include practical translation skills required for interpreters for international events such as the Olympic Paralympic games.
1. Students are required to present their translation and participate in class discussion in Japanese. You will be marked down for no/little participation.
2. Be sure to bring an electronic device (smartphone, tablet, or laptop) with dictionaries installed. You will be asked to translate a passage into Japanese on the first day of this course, then participate in the discussion in Japanese.
3. Course schedule will be introduced on the first day. |

Course Prerequisites and Related Courses | | | 必須条件ではないが、通訳技術演習 I b を履修することが望ましい。
Students are recommended, but not required, to take Japanese to English Translation Skills (Written) in the Fall Semester: Seminar on Interpretation Ib. |

成績評価の方法と基準
Course Evaluation Method and Criteria | | 1. 演習への積極性（無断欠席をしないこと・遅刻をしないこと・途中退出や早退をしないこと・翻訳課題の提出・質疑応答への参加率などで判定）50%
2. 通訳・翻訳のクォリティー（正確な文法・適切な語彙の選択・文章の主旨を理解しやすい意訳・表現力などで判定）50%
100点を満点とし、59点以下は不合格とします。
Grading
Students will be graded according to:
1. the level of their participation. From 50/100 points, you will be marked down for skipping class without notice, coming late, exiting, leaving early, failing to submit assignments, no/little participation in the discussions.
2. the quality of their translation. From 50/100 points, you will be marked down for grammatical mistakes and marked up for good selection of words/phrases and apt expression.
To pass, students must earn 60 points in total. |
