The purpose of this course is to understand the process of second language listening and the factors that affect the success of developing L2 listening skills.

Course Content / Plan
Students are required to read the sections of the reference book before each class, and to fill out the response sheet which includes a) what was unclear about the reading, b) what was interesting to you, and c) points to be discussed in class. Students will share and discuss over their response sheet during class. Following is the schedule for reading.

1) Introduction: Reflecting on issues related to teaching and learning L2 listening.
2) Teaching listening and learning to listen.
3) Listening competence.
4) A cognitive model of listening comprehension.
5) Factors that influence listening success: A systems model of L2 listening.
6) A metacognitive approach to listening instruction.
7) A metacognitive pedagogical sequence.
8) Activities for metacognitive instruction.
9) Developing perception and word segmentation skills.
10) Task-based listening lessons.
11) Integrated projects for extensive listening.
12) Listening with technology.
13) Assessing learners for listening development.
14) Epilogue
