授業の目的 【日本語】 Goals of the Course(JPN) | | 観光を着眼点とし、日本の社会と文化を対象とする。日本における観光の過去と現在を、パンデミックの影響も含めて概観したうえで、言語学・文化人類学・メディア研究のアプローチや採用した事例を中心に議論を進める。前半ではモビリティと観光に、後半では地域表象および文化表象に焦点をあてるが、コース全体を通して各個人の行動とモティベーションについて内省することも副次的な目的とする。 |

授業の目的 【英語】 Goals of the Course | | The course aims to enhance our understanding of Japanese culture and society research approaches and theories through the prism of travel and tourism. It examines Japanese travel culture from a historical perspective and in modern days including the impact of pandemics. The first half of the course focuses on tourism within mobility, policy, economics, media research. In the second half, the focus shifts to the representation of regions and cultures within the tourism discourse and the role of the language as well as visual materials in this process. The main objectives are: (1) To get acquainted with the basic concepts of tourism studies, research strategies, and data interpretation through contemplating cultural, social, linguistic, economic dimensions of tourism in Japan. (2) To explore the national image of Japan as a tourist destination as well as regional brands and the role of linguistic and visual materials in creating these brands. (3) To reflect on our own patterns of behavior as tourists or travelers. |

授業の内容や構成 Course Content / Plan | | This is a case-based course and students will be expected to join in-class discussions and activities. Participants will be offered a large degree of freedom in choosing the topic of their presentation and final paper so that it might benefit their own research project. Below are the topics to be introduced. However, the course plan is tentative and subject to change depending on students’ interests.
1 Introduction 2 Tourist gaze, the language of tourism, and other approaches 3 The roots of Japanese tourism and travel culture 4 Japan Cool and Warm: tourism policy, campaigns, institutions 5 Tourist infrastructure and hospitality 6 Media in tourism 7 Mass tourism and niche tourism. 8 Case studies on contents tourism 9 Case studies on dark tourism 10 Case studies on industrial tourism 11 Regional brands. Representation. 履修条件・関連する科目 Course Prerequisites and Related Courses | | There are no prerequisites for this course. The basic knowledge of the history and geography of Japan is welcome but not required. |

成績評価の方法と基準 Course Evaluation Method and Criteria | | Students will be evaluated on the basis of their class participation and oral presentations (70%) and a final paper (30%). Attendance is basically not evaluated but highly appreciated. |
