Goals of the Course(JPN)
本講義は日本語の理論的研究の基礎となる主要概念と方法論を理解することを目的とする。音声・音韻,形態・文法,意味,および類型論の観点から日本語言語学の基礎を学ぶ。(なお,本講義は英語で開講される。)

Goals of the Course
In this course, the participants will learn the fundamental concepts and methodology of theoretical research on the Japanese language. The major characteristics and features of the Japanese language in terms of phonetics/phonology, morphology/syntax, and semantics will be discussed. (This course will be taught in English.)

Objectives of the Course(JPN)
Through lectures, class discussions, and assignments, the participants will acquire knowledge of the subdisciplines of Japanese linguistics including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics/pragmatics. The participants will learn to critically review descriptive remarks in existing studies and develop their own research questions.

授業時の解説とディスカッションおよび課題への取り組みを通じて,日本語学の主要下位分野(音声学・音韻論,形態論・統語論,意味論)の知識を身につける。先行研究における記述を批判的に検討し,新規性のある研究課題を考案する能力を養う。
授業の内容や構成
Course Content / Plan
The course proceeds according to the following plan:

(1) Phonetics and phonology of Japanese vowels and consonants
(2) Accent and intonation
(3) Morphology and predicate paradigms
(4) Parts of speech and the variety of nominal expressions/constructions
(5) Voice phenomena and some grammatical constructions of interest
(6) Tense, aspect, and temporal properties of predicates
(7) Discourse particles

Course Prerequisites and Related Courses
This course will be taught in English.

This course will be challenging for those who do not have an (at least) intermediate command of Japanese (in addition to a good command of English).
成績評価の方法と基準
Course Evaluation Method and Criteria
Grading will be based on written assignments (70 points) and class participation (30 points). The minimum score for a passing grade is 60 points.
