Goals of the Course | | This course will be taught in English but is intended for students who are not native speakers or near native speakers of English. As such, the course has three main aims. The first aim is to help students critically engage with the various issues concerning the relationship between language, society and media. A central focus will be the use of media discourse in educational settings but we shall also consider the role of media in society more generally. English will be the language most frequently discussed but Japanese and possibly other languages (depending on the course participants) may also be referred to. The second aim of the course is to give students experience in studying an academic subject in English. To achieve this, students will be provided with greater support than would normally be the case for a content-based course and teaching materials will be adapted and supplemented to help students understand them. The third aim is to introduce students to the pleasure of extensive reading (otherwise known as graded reading) in English. |

Course Content / Plan | | n this course, students will have the opportunity to explore the relationship between language and media from a critical perspective rooted in the field of critical discourse analysis (CDA). In addition to class discussions students will conduct their own investigations on the relationship between language and media, either in the educational context or in society more generally, and present their findings in class using PowerPoint or other such software. During the course they will gain familiarity with a wide range of media-based English learning materials. The extensive reading will be done out of class. |

Course Prerequisites and Related Courses | | This is a content-focused course on media language which will be taught mainly in English. However, it is intended for students whose first language or main language of instruction is not English. In other words, the course can be regarded as an example of an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) class or, more specifically an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) class. Generally speaking, therefore, it is not likely to be suitable for students with a high level of English ability such as those belonging to the G30 program. |
