Goals of the Course(JPN) | | | 日本及び世界で活躍できる高度専門職業としての通訳者・翻訳者に必要な高い言語能力と優れた異文化理解力を兼ね備え、国際社会及び地域社会の諸問題に対応できる人材に必要な言語運用能力および通訳・翻訳技術の習得を目的とします。単なる直訳にとどまらず、プロフェッショナルな通訳技術・翻訳技術についての知見を広め、会議通訳者、官庁の通訳官、企業内通訳者、国際機関・地方自治体・NGOのバイリンガル・スタッフなど、将来みなさんが実務にたずさわるための基礎力を養い、実践力を身につけることを目標とします。 |

授業の目的 【英語】
Goals of the Course | | In this course, students will aim for the acquisition of Japanese-to-English translation skills required for qualified interpreters/translators who will join the global professional community i.e. conference interpreters, government interpreters, in-house business translators, bilingual staff members at international organisations, local governments, NGO, and other places of work. The students will be encouraged to enhance their knowledge of interpretation and translation techniques to overcome simple literal translation, and to develop skills and abilities required for bilingual professionals.
Course goals include:
1. Translating Japanese into English orally with accuracy and speed.
2. Enhancing your vocabulary and improving your expressions.
3. Contributing to solve problems related to cultural differences and being a guide with knowledge in Japanese culture/society.

授業の内容や構成
Course Content / Plan | | この授業では、主に日本語から英語への通訳演習を行います。パラグラフ・サマリー、チャンキング、サイト・トランスレーション、テクニカルタームのクイックレスポンス、シャドーイング、リプロダクションなどを経て、逐次通訳を中心に演習を行い、同時通訳にも挑戦します。前期の通訳技術演習aと異なる点は、アテンド通訳、日本国内観光ガイド通訳、イベント通訳などに必要な知識と表現のための演習が多く取り入れられることです。オリンピック・パラリンピック等、国際イベントのボランティア通訳者に必要な通訳技能および日本語／日本文化の基礎知識を含む実務通訳・実務翻訳を視野に入れ、授業は以下のように進めます。
1. 初回の授業では、ペアを組み、それぞれ数分間程度の簡単な逐次通訳をクラス全員の前でおこないます。携帯可能な和英辞書または辞書機能のある電子機器、メモ用の筆記用具を持参して下さい。
2. 第2回以降の授業計画については初回の授業で説明します。期末プレゼンテーションとして、日本国内の観光地をひとつ選び、英語で通訳ガイドを行うシミュレーションの発表をおこないます。
3. 原稿のあるスピーチ、音声のみで原稿無し、原稿があってもスピーカーが原稿に無いことをアドリブで話す、または原稿の一部を予告無しに飛ばして話すなど、通訳現場のリアリティを取り入れたさまざまな状況下での通訳に挑戦します。同時通訳システムを利用する授業があります。
Course Content
Fall semester (b) offers training in Japanese-to-English oral translation skills. Students will be trained to: 1. read Japanese faster, 2. orally summarize in English, 3. keep reading Japanese as you orally translate it into English (sight translation), 4. practice technical term input/output, 5. shadow Japanese audio material, 6. reproduce phrases and sentences to improve retention and recall ability, 7. perform consecutive interpretation, 8. perform simultaneous whispering translation, and 9. perform simultaneous interpretation with headset and microphone from the interpretation booth. During fall semester, there will be more material related to assisting visitors and guiding tourists who come to Japan. This academic year onward, the course will include practical translation skills required for interpreters at international events such as the Olympic Paralympic games.
Please note:
1. On the first day, students will role play speaker/translator in pairs. Be sure to bring an electronic device (smartphone, tablet, or laptop) with a dictionary installed and pens for note taking.
2. Course schedule will be introduced on the first day. In the final week of fall semester, student will each give a 20-min presentation of one tourist attraction in Japan of their choice. You will be required to show slides and include your talks in English describing history, culture, food, and other aspects of the place.
3. Students will orally translate audio materials with and without transcripts, presentations with off script remarks and on-the-spot additions, talks by a lecturer who suddenly decides to skip some paragraphs from the given script, and other talks that are heard in the real world. |

成績評価の方法と基準
Course Evaluation Method and Criteria | | 1. 演習への積極性（無断欠席をしないこと・遅刻をしないこと・途中退出や早退をしないこと・翻訳課題の提出・質疑応答への参加率などで判定）50%
2. 通訳・翻訳のクォリティー（正確な文法・適切な語彙の選択・文章の主旨を理解しやすい意訳・表現力などで判定）50%
100点を満点とし、59点以下は不合格とします。
Grading
Students will be graded according to:
1. the level of their participation. From 50/100 points, you will be marked down for skipping class without notice, coming late, exiting, leaving early, failing to submit assignments, no/little participation in the discussions.
2. the quality of their translation. From 50/100 points, you will be marked down for grammatical mistakes and marked up for good selection of words/phrases and apt expression.
To pass, students must earn 60 points in total. |

Study Load(Self-directed Learning Outside Course Hours) | | 原則として、翌週の授業のための準備にあたる宿題があります。課題テキストの学習、通訳のための原稿作成、通訳準備に必要なリサーチなどが含まれます。また、期末プレゼンテーション（持ち時間20分）のためのリサーチと資料作成は、各自で早めに取りかかって下さい。
Assignments
Students will be required to prepare for the next class, reading and researching as necessary. In some classes, you will be asked to come with your written translation for the given scripts. Students shall choose one place in Japan for their 20-min presentation on the last day of the course showing slides and speaking as a tourist guide. |
