Goals of the Course
By the end of this course, students will:

1) Obtain fundamental knowledge of key facts, themes, and ideas in the history of modern Japanese history.
2) Demonstrate their mastery of historical knowledge and practice through classroom discussion, debates, and oral presentations.
3) Conduct basic historical research including the effective use of libraries, archives, and online databases to produce original interpretations of the past.

Course Content / Plan
This lecture course is designed to interrogate Japan's position within and interactions with East Asia, especially in the modern period. Major class themes will include Japanese social organization, international relations, nationalism and imperialism, gender, and the environment. A primary emphasis will be on Japanese cultural history, including literature, pop culture, music, and film to bring different historical periods and themes to life.

Discussion Leadership (2x10%) = 20%

Syllabus = 40%
Final Project = 30%

Students must surpass 60% to pass.
