1) be familiar with emerging research topics and themes in modern Japanese history.
2) be introduced to new methods and techniques of researching and teaching modern Japanese history.
3) understand trends in the historiography of modern Japanese scholarship.

Course Content / Plan
This course is designed to introduce students to emerging research topics, themes, and methodologies in modern Japanese history. We will focus on recently published research monographs that push the field forward in terms of new themes of study as well as new research methods. Topics will change year by year in response to new publications.

Course Evaluation Method and Criteria
Undergraduate:
Participation = 20%
Discussion Leadership (2x10%) = 20%
Reading Outlines (3x10%) = 30%
Historiography Paper = 30%

Graduate:
Book Reviews (3x10%) = 30%
Syllabus = 30%
Historiography Paper = 40%

Students must surpass 60% to pass.
