1. To develop academic writing skills, especially thesis writing.
2. To foster academic/intellectual development, especially in research methods.
3. To improve presentation skills, especially for academic conferences.

Goals of the Course
This course aims that students will deepen understanding of the basic concepts of research and thesis writing in order to acquire the skills and ways of thinking required for research and thesis writing.

Objectives of the Course(JPN)
By taking this course, students will acquire the ability to think logically and express ideas using high-level writing and presentation skills. At the end of the course, students will be able to clearly explain the structure and design method of a work of research. At the end the course, students will be able to design a simple work of research.
授業の内容や構成
Course Content / Plan
The lecturer will go over the differences between informal and formal/academic writing, before delving into the mechanics of thesis writing. Students will study the various parts of a thesis such as the abstract, introduction, methodology, analysis, discussion/conclusion and references. They will also practise their intellectual curiosity and study various research methods. They will have practice in giving presentations meant for audiences at conferences.

Students should verify with their respective departments on whether this is compulsory or an elective. There are no prerequisites.
成績評価の方法と基準
Course Evaluation Method and Criteria
Writing 40%, participation 30% and presentation 30%. Students will be evaluated according to seminar participation (30%), writing (40%), and a presentation (30%). A minimum grade of C in every category is necessary to receive a passing grade. To pass, students must earn 60 points in total.

Textbook
Handouts will be distributed throughout the semester, and references suggested. There is no designated textbook, but lecture materials will be handed out at every class.

References will be suggested at various points in the semester. Instructions will be given as necessary in class.

Study Load(Self-directed Learning Outside Course Hours)
There will be reading and writing assignments as well as preparation to give presentations. Students are required to attempt the reading before attending class. There may be a quiz to check your preparedness at the beginning of each class. An assignment will be given at the end of each class, and students are required to submit a mini-report on the topic at the next class. Students must read the assigned paper before attending the class.
