Goals of the Course | | | The purpose of this class is to examine the experience, memory and national strategies in the Asia-Pacific region, including Japan. We begin from the time of the Second World War to the postwar period, and incorporate the latest research. Furthermore, the students will come to understand various aspects of the war and formulate their own views as modern citizens. |

Objectives of the Course | | Develop an ability to accurately understand and analyze sources on the experience and the memories of the Asia-Pacific War, the nuclear fallout and postwar national strategies, and to cultivate the ability to appraise various issue from multiple perspectives.
Attain an ability to connect historical events discussed during lectures to the present-day socio-political contexts and to formulate questions. Students are to take initiative in researching and reading sources and to express their opinions and research results to others in such ways that others will easily understand.
Demonstrate interest in sources and perspectives that others present, and make constructive contribution to discussions. |

授業の内容や構成
Course Content / Plan | | この授業では、第2次世界大戦中から戦後の時期を対象に、日本を含むアジア太平洋地域における核戦争とその後の地政学的緊張について学習します。増田教授と西野講師が共同でワークショップ形式の授業を行います。ゲスト講師として高橋博子氏を招き、ヒロシマ・ナガサキの犠牲と米国の核戦略について講義していただきます。
The course introduces students to nuclear warfare and geopoltical tensions during and after the Asia-Pacific War in the Asia-Pacific region. Professor Masuda and Dr Nishino will jointly conduct sessions on a workshop-style format. Professor Takahashi Hiroko will join as a guest lecturer and deliver lectures on the casualties of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the US nuclear strategies.

この講義ではアジア・太平洋戦争の原因、経緯、そして影響などを習い、この戦争がどのような過程を経て冷戦に発展してきたのかを見ていきます。

This lecture surveys the causes, course and consequences of the Asia-Pacific War and how the Asia-Pacific War evolved into the Cold War.

太平洋諸島の戦場に送られた日本軍兵士について講義をします。特に、多くの日本兵が亡くなったニューギニアと戦線に関する戦争経験と記憶に注目し、被害と加害についてのグループワークの準備をしてもらいます。
Class 4. July 23. War experience and memories of Japanese soldiers
This lecture looks at Japanese soldiers deployed to battle fields of the Pacific Islands. In particular, the lecture pays attention to the New Guinea campaign in which many Japanese soldiers lost their lives. Students are to embark on group work on the questions of the soldiers’ victimhood and aggression.

In this lecture, we shift our focus to the war experience of the Pacific Islanders battle grounds and the memories of the war from the Pacific Islanders' perspectives.
第6講 8月5日 課外調査 半日
名古屋市内にある博物館を見学し、第二次世界大戦中と名古屋市の歴史を学ぶほかに、博物館の展示物についての分析もします。
Class６. August 5. Excursion: Museum visit. Half-day.
Students are to visit a WWII-themed museum in Nagoya. Students will learn about Nagoya during WWII and analyse the exhibits.

The class takes place on face-to-face mode. The class sessions are on July 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd, 29th, August 5th and 12th. Students must attend all classes and a half-day extra-mural excursion. |
