Goals of the Course
Mitochondria, major organelles in the eukaryotic cell, will be focused in this course. Cutting-edge findings on their basic structures, functions, and dynamics, which have not yet been described in the biology textbooks, will be introduced. This course will aim to help students create their own concept on "what is life?".
到達目標 【日本語】
Objectives of the Course(JPN))

Objectives of the Course
Students will be able to obtain the understanding of mitochondria as key players governing life and death, and as multifaceted platforms regulating higher-order biological functions, towards applying these knowledges to establishment of human health and longevity.

Course Content / Plan
Lecture-1 (Energy conversion and heat generation): Coupling and uncoupling of electron transport and oxidative phosphorylation in the mitochondrial inner membrane

Lecture-2 (Protein import and lipid transfer): Translocators and carriers for mitochondria-destined proteins and phospholipids

Lecture-3 (Fission, fusion, and transport): GTP-driven mechanochemical enzymes and molecular switches regulating mitochondrial shaping and motility

Lecture-4 (Stress response and signaling): Cell autonomous and non-autonomous mechanisms for bidirectional crosstalk between mitochondria and the nucleus

Department seminar (Quality and quantity control): Autophagy-mediated selective clearance of dysfunctional and superfluous mitochondria
