Goals of the Course
This course will look at social identities. Social identity theory, proposed by Tajfel & Turner (1979), has been one of the most studied theories in social psychology. A social identity is held when you identify yourself as a member of a group, more so than you as an individual. Social identity is at the core of stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination.. We will read and discuss chapters of a highly acclaimed book on the matter of intergroup psychology, Brown & Capozza's (2016) "Social identities: Motivational, emotional and cultural influences." Through our readings, we will learn cognitive, emotional, and behavioral consequences of perceiving outgroup others, and how we view ourselves as a member of an ingroup.

Objectives of the Course
Students will be able to identify the social processes behind prejudice and racism, and understand that it is in the human nature to be compelled to such negative psychological tendencies. They will also gain perspective on how one can avoid falling into the trap of ingroup favoritism and outgroup discrimination.

In principle, lecture and seminar course subjects are offered in-person.

Additional measures for remote class (on-demand class)
Subject to the time zones of the constituents of the group, classes will be conducted live via Zoom or other platforms (if there is little time difference), or it may be a on-demand discussion format (if time differences make live classes inconvenient). On-demand classes will entail written feedback for each presentation by the audience to be uploaded onto a common site.
