Goals of the Course
This course looks at theories and practice of interpersonal communication, and serves to cover not only the basics of the area, but also at a more advanced level, including theoretical frameworks for planning research. Students will learn about the influences of culture, identity, perception and language on interpersonal communication, as well as how communication should be studied in different interpersonal contexts. The contents of the course will help students incorporate theories and their tenets into their research, so that their research plans will be soundly based on a theoretical framework, covering most topics relevant to this area of communication. This course not only has relevance to social psychology, but to psychological counseling, psychology of emotion, cognitive psychology, and family/community psychology.

Objectives of the Course
Students will be expected to gain the following skills and knowledge regarding interpersonal communication:
1) gain understanding of the components of interpersonal communication
2) critique existing theories for their robustness
3) appreciate how social and cultural contexts affect our communication behavior
4) recognize that communication is not just words
5) understand the importance of theory-driven research
6) attain the ability to incorporate interpersonal theory into their own research programs
7) understand the basics of interpersonal relationships
