Goals of the Course | | | The goal of this course is to help students in solid earth science to obtain basic knowledge of the rheology of rocks andminerals as a fundamental process of deformation in the mantle. Field excursion may be scheduled during the course. |

Objectives of the Course(JPN) | | | マントルのジオダイナミクスは主にかんらん石の流動特性によって支配されているが、温度・歪の形式・差応力・歪速度・水やメルトの有無などの条件に依存して変化する。本講義では、マクロ的なマントル変動の素過程として岩石鉱物のレオロジーを理解するために必要となる基礎的な知識を解説する。また，必要に応じて野外実習を実施することもある． |

Objectives of the Course | | | Mantle dynamics is controlled by rheological properties of the main constituent minerals of rocks such as olivine with a function of several factors such as temperature, strain, flow stress, strain rate, water and melt. |

第１部 地球の熱構造，マントル対流，地球物質大循環
第２部 地球構成物質の階層構造：地球の大構造から岩石の微細構造へ
第３部 マントルの流動とカンラン石の結晶方位定向配列
第４部 マントルの地震波異方性とカンラン岩の構造敏感性 | Structural Geology in Mantle
1. Earth's thermal structure, mantle flow, global material cycle
2. A stratified Earth structure: Macroscopic to microscopic structure
3. Mantle rheology and olivine crystallographic preferred orientations
4. Seismic anisotropy in Mantle and Structural sensitivity of peridotite |

成績評価の方法と基準
Course Evaluation Method and Criteria | | | 学習態度、出席課題、期末レポートで評価する。それぞれについてC 評定以上を合格要件とする。マントルについて、授業中に得た知識や概念を用いて論述できることを合格の基準とする。 | | Evaluation will be based on a report (20%) and a final exam (80%). A grade of "C" or better in each of these is required to pass. Students are required to be able to discuss the mantle using the knowledge and concepts obtained in the class. |
