Goals of the Course | | | This course is intended as a general overview of modern Japanese literature, covering the period between 1868 and the present. We begin by discussing the concept of “literature“, and by considering what makes it “modern“ and “Japanese“ before moving on to learn about a number of literary forms and political ideologies that inform(ed) literary production. The readings are discussed in close relation to their respective social and political contexts, providing students with good background knowledge of specific aspects of modern Japanese society. Finally, the course aims to familiarize students with various critical and theoretical approaches useful in any reading of literature. |

Course Content / Plan | | Although every effort is made to minimize the reading load, the study of literature necessarily involves a significant amount of actual reading. Students should therefore be prepared to spend time reading a different piece of fiction ranging from short stories to long novels every week.
Below is a tentative outline:

履修条件・関連する科目
Course Prerequisites and Related Courses | | | The course is designed for 1st and 2nd year undergraduate students of the G30 Japan-in-Asia Cultural Studies Program. Undergraduate students from Japanese programs (e.g. NUemi), as well as NUPACE students are welcome to participate. Students need no prior knowledge of Japanese literature but should expect (and enjoy) reading a different literary text each week. |

To pass, students must earn 60 points in total. |
