授業の目的 【英語】 Goals of the Course | | In this course we will explore a number of authors and texts that destabilize the notion of “Japanese literature” as national literature written exclusively by ethnic Japanese born and raised in Japan. These challenges come from multiple directions and include post-colonial texts authored by Zainichi Koreans writers, ethnic minority writers of Okinawan or Ainu background, newcomer immigrant authors who chose Japanese as their literary language, as well as Japanese authors writing in, or about their experience with, a foreign language. We will discuss both the various terms used to categorize transnational writing as well as their role as constitutive outside of “Japanese literature”. |

授業の内容や構成 Course Content / Plan | | We will read short and medium-length novels in English translation. Note that this course is not a lecture but a seminar focusing on student-led discussions.
Below is a rough outline of the course content:

履修条件・関連する科目 Course Prerequisites and Related Courses | | The course is open to undergraduate and graduate students of the G30 Japan-in-Asia Cultural Studies Program (2nd year and above) as well as NUPACE students. Students from other majors are welcome if they are familiar with the basics of literary analysis.
In keeping with NU policies, students must attend 80% of classes in order to receive credit for the course. |

English translations of all texts will be provided electronically (most of the Japanese originals as well as translations into a number of other languages are available at NU libraries). |

In addition, all participants will be discussion leaders once, which will need extensive preparation (supported by the instructor). |
