授業の目的 【英語】 Goals of the Course | | This course positions the survey of Asian cinemas within the socio-historical exigencies and cultural context of Japan, Korea, the Sinophone world, and Southeast Asia since 1945. It aims to facilitate the understanding of Asian film traditions in relation to the sociopolitical history and discourses of modernities in this region and beyond. Students are expected to acquire basic knowledge of Asian film history. They are urged to learn to interpret and analyze films by engaging with contemporary socio-cultural issues that became significant during the timeframe under examination. |

4. POSTWAR HONG KONG CINEMA 1950S~1980S: SHAW BROTHERS, NEW WAVES & GENRE FILMS
5. NEW CHINESE CINEMA IN THE 1980S: THE FIFTH GENERATION
6. CHINESE CINEMA IN THE 1990s AND 2000s: MAIN MELODY, MAINSTREAM AND THE INDEPENDENT FILMMAKING

履修条件・関連する科目 Course Prerequisites and Related Courses | | This advanced course is open to both undergraduate and graduate students who have demonstrated certain interest and background knowledge in cinema studies, and have the competency in reading and analyzing cinematic texts in English. Preferably we welcome students whose written and spoken English abilities are adequate enough for them to participate in presentations and write short essays and so forth. |

成績評価の方法と基準 Course Evaluation Method and Criteria | | 40% Participation; Attendance; contribution to class discussion/group presentation (Perusall Reading Track is part of the “discussion+contribution”).
10% Take-home Project (a film/event report)
20% Response Paper Assignment (10%x2)
30% Final Paper
NOTE: Three absences (3 times or more) without proper evidence provided equals FAIL. |

課外学習等(授業時間外学習の指示) Study Load(Self-directed Learning Outside Course Hours) | | YouTube/MUBI and other streaming platforms will be extremely important for your study of cinema, especially if you do not often visit film theaters, or watch “films”. Type in the film title mentioned by the author(s) in the search engine and check it out!
BYOD: You can bring your own devices to the classroom and use them under the conditions that they will facilitate your in-class participation and learning; we do not expect you to use your devices for social media networking (such as FB/LINE/WeChat messaging) that are not related to the course contents etc. during the lectures. |
