授業の目的 【英語】 Goals of the Course | | This course will introduce academic literacy skills necessary for your independent research projects. The course lays the foundation of academic writing in three principal stages: pre-writing, writing, and revision. Academic Writing II and III will build on these fundamental skills.
In Academic Writing I, you will: Identify and evaluate academic literature; Formulate your research topic into a viable research question; Produce a research proposal; and Embark on your mid-term report.
The primary target of the course is students enrolled in master’s program in the School of Law. However, the course remains open to students in other Schools. English is the medium of instruction. For more details and the class schedule, please consult the course syllabus posted on TACT. |

到達目標 【英語】 Objectives of the Course | | At the end of this course students will have written a complete research proposal. Students will be able to find and evaluate relevant academic literature and write a well-defined research question, research methods, tentative conclusions, full list of references, and bibliography. |

授業の内容や構成 Course Content / Plan | | This class teaches writing in three stages: pre-writing; writing and revision.
1 Pre-Writing (1) Orientation • What is academic writing? • Time management • Finding and evaluating academic literature (1): How and what to search
2 Pre-Writing (2) • Research proposal (1): elements of the research proposal. • Finding and evaluating academic literature (2): how to read; type of reading.
3 Pre-writing (3): • Finding and evaluating academic literature (3): • Taking and making notes - summary and paraphrasing • Managing sources • Asking questions
4 Writing (1) • Overall structure of the proposal. Brainstorming: developing the outline • Formatting your document (margins, font, spelling, page numbering, line spacing) 5 Writing (2) • From an outline to paragraph writing: • The thesis statement
6 Writing (3) • Paragraph structure: the topic sentence 7 Writing (4) • Paragraph writing: from the topic sentence to the supporting evidence and ideas
8 Writing (5) • Paragraph writing. Quotes: reported speech and reporting verbs • Avoiding plagiarism
9 Writing (6): • Paragraph writing: connecting ideas
10 Writing (7): • Writing the introduction
11 Writing (8): • Writing the conclusion and the title 12 Writing (9): Footnotes and bibliography 13 Revising (1): Peer-editing and checking consistency in: • Logic and coherence; • Register (style); and • Verb tense
14 Revising (2): Checking your bibliography
15 Revising (3): Giving feedback |

履修条件・関連する科目 Course Prerequisites and Related Courses | | No prerequisites. This course (Academic Writing I) is mandatory. Academic Writing II and III are not mandatory. However, the School of Law recommends students enrol in and complete all three. |

注意事項 Notice for Students | | Consult the full course outline posted on TACT for further details. Attendance is mandatory. In case of absence, students must write to the instructor at least 48 hours prior to the start of class and obtain permission. Lateness more than ten minutes after the start of the class will be marked as “absent”. Come to class prepared: read, watch and listen to materials posted on TACT for the class. Submit assignments on time. Should you anticipate unforeseen delay in submission, you may seek an extension at least three days before the assignment due. However, the instructor reserves the right to approve or deny the request. |
