Goals of the Course
This course teaches the use of social science quantitative techniques, emphasizing applications of value to administrators and researchers alike in the fields of law, political science, public policy, and public and international affairs. It includes a review of theoretical application as well as practical use of descriptive statistics and an introduction to hypothesis testing.

Session 1 - Course introduction and outline
Session 2 - Key concepts, using statistics in the research process, levels of measurement
Session 3 - Basic descriptive statistics, displaying data
Session 4 - Measures of central tendency
Session 5 - Measures of dispersion
Session 6 - Review for midterm
Session 7 - Midterm examination
Session 8 - Measures of dispersion (cont.), the normal curve
Session 9 - Z-scores, area under the curve
Session 10 - Inferential statistics, sampling distribution, central limit theorem
Session 11 - Bias and efficiency, confidence
Session 12 - Hypothesis testing
Session 13 - Hypothesis testing, pt. 2
Session 14 - Two-tailed t-tests
Session 15 - Final examination

Course Prerequisites and Related Courses
A good command of the English language (reading, speaking, and writing) is required. A mathematical background is not expected, but students should know basic algebra at a minimum.
