到達目標 【英語】 Objectives of the Course | | By the end of this course, students should be equipped with knowledge and skills concerning the following:
1) Explain why crystal form in specific structures in relation to atomic bonding mechanisms.
2) Know the most common crystal structures and why these are common..
3) Understand the basics of crystal classification based on symmetry analysis.
4) Understand the concept of reciprocal lattice and how it is related to diffraction of waves.
5) The relations of the reciprocal lattice with Fourier analysis and plane waves.
6) Know practical aspects and fundamentals of X-ray diffraction of the cubic crystal system.
7) Know what structure and form factors are. |

授業の内容や構成 Course Content / Plan | | First the different types of atomic bonds are introduced. Then some mechanical properties are discussed, then crystal structures are presented based on a symmetry analysis. The reciprocal lattice is described in relation to the diffraction phenomenon. The relations of the reciprocal lattice with Fourier analysis and plane waves are discussed. Some practical aspects of X-ray diffraction are presented for the cubic crystal system. The amplitude and intensities of diffraction peaks are discussed, introducing structure and form factors.

成績評価の方法と基準 Course Evaluation Method and Criteria | | Grades will be based on:
- Reports. Approximately one report per lecture, to be submitted before the next lecture. If a student fails to submit a report by the deadline, the score for that report will be zero.
- A midterm examination
- A final examination. |
