Goals of the Course
The overall purpose of the course is to help students understand the organization of human interaction (communication) and the relationship between language and society, as well as enhance a deeper insight into human social lives. It also helps them be equipped with the basic skills to analyze human social actions in the actual interactional context from a micro perspective.

Objectives of the Course(JPN)
By the end of the course, students are expected to:
(1) be able to describe how people "do things" with words and body
(2) be able to describe how people understand meanings in others’ behaviors
(3) be able to describe different levels of interactional organizations
(4) understand the approach of CA and obtain its basic analytical skills
(5) be able to apply the findings from CA to the actual communicative contexts and acquire practical communication skills
(7) correctly understand and summarize the literature on human social interaction
授業の内容や構成
Course Content / Plan
This course aims at exploring the organization of social interaction (communication), introducing the findings from ‘conversation analysis (CA),’ a micro-analytic approach to how people accomplish various everyday actions and activities through language and body. Students will learn the mechanism of how we understand what others are saying and doing and understand what makes our conversation possible.

Course schedule and topics:

1. Introduction of the course

3~4: Conversation analysis: basic concepts and approach
5~10: Basic organization of conversation
11~13: Bodily conduct in interaction

Participation and attendance (+ reaction papers and quizzes) 20%
Assignments x 2  40% total
Final exam 40%

Passing grade: score of 60 or more.
