授業の目的 【英語】 Goals of the Course | | ◇ Students will enhance their abilities to read and interpret early modern Japanese texts (in translation and to some extent in the original language), and through close readings of primary texts, come to a understanding of how early modern literary language developed from classical language in terms of grammar, style, and diction.
◇ Students will learn to distinguish between different genres and literary styles of early modern literature.
◇ Students will develop an appreciation for the material aspects of early modern printed books and an eye for deciphering a variety of scripts. |

授業の内容や構成 Course Content / Plan | | In this graduate seminar, we will be reading works of early modern illustrated fiction, mostly dating from the An’ei (1772-81) and Tenmei (1781-89) periods. Widely regarded as forerunners of the modern comicbook, these works dazzle the eye with their beautifully executed woodblock printed illustrations while confounding readerly sensibilities with mind-bending stories about mermaids, magic clocks, and personified food. Another aspect of their artistry is how they encode critiques of government and contemporary society in the guide of nonsense, in order to evade censorship. To better understand the satirical premises of these works, we will be learning about the problems—fiscal mismanagement, ineffectual responses to natural disasters, moral grounding of the samurai bureaucracy—at which these writers aimed their critiques. All texts in this class will be available in English translation, and students who would like to read them in the original will be given the option to do so. Prior study of premodern Japanese literature is helpful but not necessary. |
