授業の内容や構成 Course Content / Plan | | This graduate seminar is a survey in fan studies theory and methodologies, intended for MA and PhD students working in the areas of popular culture or media studies. Media convergence has fundamentally changed the way we consume entertainment in the first decades of the twenty-first century, enabling unprecedented access to fan objects (like media texts or celebrity performers), blurring the lines between producers and consumers (i.e., "prosumers") and giving rise to new social formations based on shared fan attachments. Fan studies scholars cross traditional disciplinary lines (like cultural studies, media studies, anthropology, psychology, etc.) in order to better understand what is happening in our current moment and what impact these changes are having on individuals, communities, and media industries.
We will begin this class with the pioneering work of "first wave" fan studies like John Fiske and Henry Jenkins on fan subversion and resistance, followed by the sociological turn in "second wave" fan studies and psychological turn in "third-wave" fan studies. Most of our attention, however, will be focused on the interesting work that is being done currently in the areas of post-object and post-convergent fandom and fan worlds.
Please note this seminar is intended primarily for Master’s level students in the Graduate School of Humanities (including LCS and JACS). Undergraduate students who are interested in the class should write for more information about the possibility of enrollment. NUPACE students should not sign up for this course unless they are actively working on a MA or PhD thesis related to media fandom AND they have consulted with me beforehand. |
