Goals of the Course(JPN)

Goals of the Course
The course aims to enhance our understanding of Japanese culture and society through the prism of tourism research approaches and theories.
It examines the range of ways in which tourism practices, host culture, and host-guest interactions are represented in media, advertising, tour guides, social media, and travel writing and how this storytelling contributes to social imagination from a historical perspective and in modern-days.
We will use the semiotic approach to analyze the language used to promote and introduce tourist destinations, and the signs and images used to define destinations or describe the visitors’ expectations and experiences.

The main objectives are:
(1) To get acquainted with the basic concepts of tourism studies, research strategies, and data interpretation by contemplating the cultural, social, linguistic, and economic dimensions of tourism in Japan.
(2) To explore the national image of Japan as a tourist destination as well as regional images and the role of linguistic and visual materials in creating these images.
(3) To reflect on our own patterns of behavior as tourists or travelers.
