授業の目的 【英語】
Goals of the Course
This seminar is basically only open to MA/PhD students who have demonstrated certain interest and background knowledge in cinema studies, and have the competency in reading and analyzing cinematic texts in English. Preferably we welcome students whose written and spoken English abilities are adequate enough for them to participate in presentations and to write short essays and so forth. Importantly, it is however possible for undergrads (including NUPACE students) to sit in or enroll at our seminar, based on mutual understanding on the level of the seminar and the responsibility shared (namely, the students understands the academic challenges, and lecturer acknowledges the students’ potential and efforts). Under such circumstances, individual consultation with the lecturer and trial sessions are possible.

授業の内容や構成
Course Content / Plan
This seminar aims to survey and examine some of the current debates in media and cienma
studies, in paying specific attention to the Asian context and Sinophone mediascapes, both of
which have been rarely covered or touched upon in other similar postgraduate courses but is
vital to students who aspire to develop their critical horizons vis- -vis the positioning of
media and visual cultures amidst current global geopolitical circumstances. The seminar is
structured by following the ‘keywords’ that are in one way or another addressing the cuttingedge
topics in media and visual studies today, with a line-up of the most updated and highly
selective readings.

Possible weekly Keyword-led discussions may include but are not limited to:
Affect; Archive; Asianism; Assemblage; Body; Capitalism; Ethics; Ethnics & Race; Feminism; Infrastructure; Sinophone;
