Goals of the Course
This course will look at prejudice and discrimination. We will focus on how people develop stereotypes and prejudice, the rationale and motive behind them, their measurement and mitigation, and target specific characteristics. We will not only study racism, but sexism, ageism, physique related prejudice, religious discrimination amongst other targets. Theories of stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination will be discussed, as well, aiming to help students in their research. We will read and discuss chapters of a comprehensive book on the matter of prejudice, Nelson's (2009) "Handbook of prejudice, stereotyping and discrimination." Through our readings, we will learn cognitive, emotional, and behavioral facets of outgroup hatred, and how we can mitigate their effects on how we view and act toward others.
