授業の目的 【英語】 Goals of the Course | | The participants will learn the basic materials on the topic such as quantum field theory, elementary particle physics, and so on, which will be determined by them, through a series of discussion among them. They can practice one's capability to think logically and to study by oneself. |

到達目標 【日本語】 Objectives of the Course(JPN)) | | |
|
到達目標 【英語】 Objectives of the Course | | A student learns the basics of quantum field theory necessary to study elementary particle or nuclear physics, the basics of elementary particle physics, depending on the chosen text. The object described in the "course purpose" implies that the accuracy of one's understanding on each subject crucially depends on her or his quality of preparation and discussion among all participants. I dare not to present my own understanding on each issue. |
|
|
授業の内容や構成 Course Content / Plan | | Seminar is open to free discussion, mostly organized by one of the attendees. A topic as well as a textbook will be determined via the discussion among attendees in first class. The example of candidates of the topics is as follows; quantum field theory, basic of elementary particle physics, representation theory of Lie groups and Lie algebras,
introduction to string theory.
Because it is important to practice the correct way of studying one theoretical theme through a seminar, we dare not to determine the goal of the range covered by the seminar.
(Important remark : ) This class is not specific to the G30 program, while non-G30 students have not been demanded to have the abillity to discuss physics in oral. Thus, only if the number of G30 students attains more than or equal to the total number of participants, the first 90 minutes are assigned to the class in Japanese, and the last 90 minutes are assigned to the class in English. Otherwise, disucssion will basically proceed in Japanese. |

|
履修条件 Course Prerequisites | | Understanding on the basics of quantum mechanics and analytical mechanics is assumed. Depending on the number of G30-participants, Japananese sopken language skill is demanded. |

成績評価の方法と基準 Course Evaluation Method and Criteria | | A student is graded based on the attitude of participation as well as the achievement of the purpose inferred from her or his question, presentation of idea to solve the other's question, in every class. The credit will be given to the student who gets C- (C for the student who entered the university before fiscal year 2020) or higher grade. The one who tends to miss the class due to the private reasons, such as job search, participation in the other class or the event in lab, is declined to attend this class, because such an attitude affects the other student significantly.
Depending on the progress status, every participant may be requested to submit a paper on some specific subject. Note that credits will not be given to anybody if too many intensive lectures turn out to hold in parallel to this class. |
|
|
教科書・テキスト Textbook | | The textbook will be fixed according to what the participants like to study in this class. The example of the candidates for the textbook is as follows :
Ta-Pei Cheng , Ling-Fong Li, Gauge Theory of Elementary Particle Physics, Oxford Science Publications
A.M.Polyakov, Gauge Fields and Strings, CRC Press
S.Weinberg, The Quantum Theory of Fields: Volume 1, Foundations, Cambridge University Press
九後 汰一郎、ゲージ場の量子論(1), (2), 培風館 (in Japanese only)
J.Polchinski, String Theory: Volume 1, Cambridge Monographs on Mathematical Physics. |

課外学習等(授業時間外学習の指示) Study Load(Self-directed Learning Outside Course Hours) | | It is indispensable to try to understand the content which will be discussed in the next class in advanse, and to prepare the questions regarding the points unclear to you in the course of that process. |

注意事項 Notice for Students | | In case you cannot attend the class, it is necessary to tell me the reason at any time. |
